Harriet Miller was the Superintendant of Public Instruction for Montana for three terms, from 1956 to 1968, and mayor of Santa Barbara, California from 1995 to 2001. The collection primarily consists of bound copies of the speeches Ms. Miller made during her tenure as Superintendant (1955-1968). It also contains letters (1919; 1960); printed material (1960-2006); school notes and records for her mother, Vera Crome Miller (1918;1923); clippings (1961-2007). A sub-group contains documents relating to her companion of over 40 years, Elizabeth Neill Harrison (1943-1948). (MC 371) This collection consists of two subgroups: the Harriet Miller sub-group and the Elizabeth Harrison sub-group. Harriet''s papers consist primarily of the bound copies of the speeches she gave as Superintendent of Public Instruction for Montana. Her speeches were primarily given at high school commencements, and state-wide civic organization meetings, such as Rotary. These bound volumes also contain copies of speeches she gave at staff meetings while Superintendent. Other documents in this series include four letters, printed materials that were collected by, or pertain to, Harriet, and school records pertaining to Harriet''s mother, Vera Crome Miller. The Elizabeth Harrison sub-group contains letters, clippings and printed material relating to Elizabeth''s scholastic career, and miscellany materials collected from Elizabeth''s time working for the Montana Highway Commission. The Elizabeth Harrison sub-group contains two letters, clippings and printed material relating to Elizabeth''s scholastic career, and miscellany materials collected from Elizabeth''s time working for the Montana Highway Commission. A small group of her Montana Highway Commission photographs were donated in 1990; the rest of her photographs were donated by the Harriet Miller estate upon Harriet''s death in 2010.
